How to Obtain a Building Permit in Cameroon

If you want to construct a building in Cameroon, you need to obtain a building permit or license from the local authorities. A building permit is a legal document that authorizes you to start the construction work on your land. It also ensures that your building complies with the urban planning regulations and safety standards.
The process of obtaining a building permit in Cameroon varies depending on the location, type and size of your building. However, there are some common steps that you need to follow:
- Get in touch with the town hall of your local municipal office of the area where the land is located. You can obtain a list of documents to provide and a form to fill from the office. You can also consult a legal practitioner or an authorized supervision agency to assist you with the process.
- Prepare all the required documents that are listed under the Required Documents section of this page. Some of the documents include: proof of land ownership, architectural plan, structural analysis, land tax receipt, town planning certificate, etc. You may need to pay some fees for some of these documents.
- Submit the completed application form along with the documents in the Mayor’s office or the Government Delegate’s office, depending on the type of permit you are applying for. You also need to pay a percentage of the estimated cost of the building to the municipal treasury as well as a fee for the joint commission that will evaluate your application.
- Wait for the approval of your application. The joint commission will inspect your land and review your documents before issuing a decision. The approval may take up to 15 days or more depending on the complexity of your project. If your application is approved, you will receive a building permit signed by the Mayor or the Government Delegate. If your application is rejected, you will receive a notification with the reasons for rejection.
Once you obtain your building permit, you can start your construction work under the supervision of an engineer or an architect. You also need to respect the validity period of your permit and renew it if necessary. Obtaining a building permit in Cameroon may seem complicated, but it is essential for ensuring the quality and safety of your building.
